After a very long series of flights, I am finally in Edinburgh with Kirsty!
The flight from NZ to KL was long but not unpleasant. The hotel (the Pan Pacific Airport Hotel) was good. They shuttle you from the airport along the long corridors to the hotel and it had a nice view and was a pretty good hotel (albeit for the slight smell of smoke..I had a non smoking room but I think the smoke was coming in from the floor below).
After completing a workout in their well equipped gym the next morning, I took the KLIA Express train from the airport to KL. Costs 70 RM return (about $20nz- ish) and takes about 28 minutes each way. Visited some guitar shops and the Low-Yat IT mall. Didnt buy anything as the thing I wanted to get was overpriced there (compared to what I could buy it for from Hong Kong via Ebay).
After a day in KL centre I caught a flight from KL to Frankfurt via Bangkok. Had to wait for over an hour in Bangkok while they changed the cabin crew and cleaned the plane before heading off on a very long flight to Frankfurt. Frankfurt airport is set out strangely. There are only about 20 seats to sit on and i had a five hour flight. Was also expensive to buy coffee and lunch there.
Finally got on the flight from Franfurt to Edinburgh and it was the worst flight ever..so much violent turbulance. Was very glad to be on the ground again when I landed.
Kirsty did well getting us a great flat close to Princes Street (about a 10-15 minute walk away.
After Kirsty met me at Haymarket and we caught a cab home, she headed back to work and I went on my first run in Edinburgh (one way to get over the jet lag!) It is a nice area where we live. My run took me around the Botanical Gardens and it was nice and cool..good running conditions.
Over the weekend it rained a fair bit..yay!
We went to Princes Street to visit the shops and also walked around the Botanical Gardens (5 mins walk from our flat).
We also visited Camera Obscurer which works like a large pin hole camera. You watch a table that is about 1 metre in diameter and a image of Edinburgh is projected on to this. The lady then spins the camera around and you get a great view of Edinburgh, although it wasnt that clear due to the rain on the day we went.
Watched the British Grand Prix on Sunday (great that it is on live instead of at Midnight like in NZ!).
Went for a good run this morning after walking Kirsty to work. Went up through Bruntsfield and to the base of Arthur's Seat and then back to the flat. Again, it was nice and cool.
It is forecast for a fair amount of rain this week. The locals arent too happy with the state of their summer!
